Basic Tenerife guide if you want to experience more than a full English breakfast or fish & chips

Tenerife sits around 150 miles from the coast of West Africa. The island is basically a Volcano, so not for the faint hearted, I would not want to be there if it went off. Most people fly to Tenerife South and stay in the holiday themed tourist hotspots.

Be adventurous and explore the island

You could hire a car and drive over to the north coast for Garachico or Puerto de la Cruz. Or get a cab for 80 Euros, or take the bus if you don’t mind a long trip around the coast. A car is the best option as the island is 50 to 75 miles of driving from end to end. The routes you can drive go over mountains. I’m an open water swimmer, so my main thing was a daily swim. The sea never goes below 20 celcius all year, so for me a dream place for a dip.

Other beaches are at Puerto de la Cruz

This beach is very sandy, but the sea is more challanging for a proper swim. These photos were taken around the 6th or 7th February and it was like mid-summer in the Southern England. A jet can get you to Tenerife South in just 4.5 hours from London.

Would you like to see some wild areas like Masca?

Masca is up in the mountains. It’s stunning but pretty dangerous and rugged.
